Professor Chang Yinchao was born in the city of Soochow (Suzhou) some 50 miles west of Shanghai. Although his wealthy parents and grandparents were collectors of traditional Chinese art, they were not pleased with his determination to become an artist. Critics of contemporary Chinese art recognize two schools of modern Chinese art. Professor Change was acknowledged as the leading representative of the Kiang Nan (South of the Yangtze) school. He left Shanghai where he had been the president of the China Fine Arts College ahead of the Communist takeover of mainland China in the late 1940's. He settled in Taiwan, Republic of China, where he continued to teach and paing during his lifetime.
